During the forum, any student in attendance will be able to freely ask questions about any of the areas of study in the College of Arts and Sciences as well as share their thoughts, ideas and concerns. Questions involving popular majors and minors such as Political Science, Biology and Mathematics will be answered during the forum.
"We want to try to make time available for students to talk to the dean, give input and share issues. We also want the dean to have a chance to talk to students about things that are happening in the College of Arts and Sciences," said Dr. Michael Brown, associate dean and psychology professor.
Dean White will be working in conjunction with the Dean's Student Leadership Council to host this event, as well as future proceedings to build a better relationship between the faculty and the student body.
The representatives of the Dean's Student Leadership Council will act as liaisons between the faculty and the students in their department. According to Brown, the Dean's Student Leadership Council is made up of "student representatives from each of the departments in the College of Arts and Sciences who are working to establish a relationship between the dean and the students."
Brown hopes that through this forum, students will begin to build some sense of identity as part of the College of Arts and Sciences. Because this particular college of ECU is so large and diverse, Brown wants students to see that they are a part of something and that there are similarities between the departments.
Thomas Anderson, sophomore student in the College of Arts and Sciences, feels that the Dean's Student Forum would be a constructive experience. "If I had any questions about my major or minor, I would probably go," he said. Anderson went on to add, "I think it's a good idea because I really don't know who the dean of the College of Arts and Sciences even is. I think it would be good for the dean to build a relationship with the students."
Brown hopes that this event will be a great learning experience for students and have a positive outcome. "I hope students will gain information about questions that they may have and if students have questions and concerns, they will be able to present them." Brown also hopes after this event, "the dean and office staff will know more about what is going on with the students."
"I am excited for this event. I feel likes it's a really positive move to make some different avenues for communication," said Brown.
Brown concluded by saying that there is an open house for the College of Arts and Sciences in the works, as well as making the Dean's Student Forum a reoccurring event every semester.
For students interested in attending the Dean's Student Forum, it will take place in Bate 1032 at 7 p.m. tonight.
