We all know ECU Alumni are some of the finest and brightest around. However, Greenville itself is home to many talented up-and-coming musicians who are ready to share their musical messages with the world. One new artist hailing from ECU is Jermaine Michaels, known on stage as "J Mic." Michaels is a Business and Accounting major and rising senior at ECU and he is ready to change the game when it comes to music. The former 99.1 Apollo contest winner in Fayetteville, NC likes to connect with people in a special way.
"It's special how people feel your music and they can relate to what you're saying," said Michaels. Michaels has always been a part of the music game. From a young age he was known as "J Mic" from the musical group "Name Brand" that he had at a very young age.
This 20-year-old student says that music challenges and recording are not the issue, just having "the time to do it" is. Just like his influences, Tupac, Jay-Z and Young Jeezy, J Mic "goes hard" in his quest for musical success. "Don't be in the game, be the game," Michaels said. Much could be said as to how this will be accomplished by J Mic, but only time will tell.
A North Carolina rising star transplanted from the "ATL" is Brandon Tyson and his stage name, "Business," says it all. A talented lyricist and versatility guru, Tyson is actually learning all he can about the music industry before diving into it. Tyson has been writing poetry for five years, which soon turned into rhymes and musical tones. Business is focusing on conquering knowledge before burning up the airwaves. However, you can be on the lookout for this "Yung Joc-esque" artist soon.
Music runs deep through the hearts of many locals and students, and those both young and old find solace in the vibrations of a heavy baseline and the throb of an 808; "Nino" a more seasoned rapper, knows how that feels. "I want my lyrics to paint a picture of what I've been through … I want people to feel my music," he said. This connection has been a long time coming. The 27 year old Simpson, NC native has been using his Mob Deep influenced rhymes to inspire a musical movement. Music has always been in Nino's life -- his father, a former DJ, influenced him to appreciate the life experiences that make good music.
Here's hoping that in the cool evenings of summertime, we have some hot beats from these fresh local artists to pulse through the night air.
