Pirate swimmers team with Special Olympians

The ECU men's and women's swim teams took to the pool Tuesday along side members of the local Special Olympics swim team.

For this annual event, the Greenville-based Special Olympics team brought nearly 20 athletes of all ages to Minges Pool and participated in a combined workout with the ECU swimmers. Each Pirate was paired up with a guest athlete and swam with them offering tips and encouragement throughout the practice.

Freshman swimmer Miles Maximini enjoyed the experience and looks forward to helping out with next year's team.

"It was a lot of fun to have some honorary Pirates for the day," said Maximini. "I'm looking forward already to doing this again next year."

After the practice, the teams came together and practiced several team cheers to end the evening on a high note. Coming off their most successful season in team history, the Pirate's are always excited about finding new ways to give back to the sport that has given them so much.

"It is really great to get to swim with these guys," said team captain Rachel Blue. "They come in here with so much enthusiasm and appreciation that it really helps us remember why we do what we do."
