Along with electing new leaders for the 2009-10 school year, the Student Activities Board will also be enforcing new policies for the new school year. Erin Edwards, the current president of SAB, says that these changes were made with students in mind.
"SAB will be focusing more on student input this year, as last year was focusing more on rebuilding and reorganizing the internal structure [of the organization]," she said. "[This] included establishing clear expectations, rewriting an entire constitution and creating leadership opportunities that will continue through next year."
Some of the changes being made to SAB next year include the renaming and regrouping of the committees within the organization, including changing the Barefoot committee to a Special Events committee.
The other committees will include Films, Marketing, Entertainment, Visual Arts and Initiatives, which will be a combination of the former Lectures committee and Cultural Awareness committee. Another significant change to SAB includes the abolition of the vice president and secretary positions within the organization; something Edwards says was done "in order to reflect the mission that we are trying to accomplish."
That mission includes gathering more student opinions on events organized by SAB, a feat that Edwards explains was difficult this past school year.
"The new board will be focusing on gathering more student opinion, which has definitely been the hardest component of running an organization," Edwards said. "I wish them the best of luck; SAB has been through such a transitional year, but anything is possible with the road they are about to take."
The new SAB leadership board was elected this semester and will consist of Jordan Bolick as president, Jonathan Butler as Entertainment chair, Jessica Bova as Films chair, Wendy Dixon as Initiatives chair, James Caviness as Marketing chair, Allie Collinson as Special Events chair and Erin Hackman as Visual Arts chair.
More information about the changes to SAB will soon be available on the organization's Web site.
