ECU senior Kristen Dalton was crowned Miss USA 2009 on Sunday. A former Miss North Carolina USA, Dalton beat 50 other contestants from 49 states and the District of Columbia during the Miss USA 2009 pageant at Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino in Las Vegas. The show aired live on Sunday night on NBC.

Dalton, 22, is a double major in psychology and Spanish from Wilmington, N.C.

First runner up was Miss California USA Carrie Prejean, of San Diego, and second runner-up was Miss Arizona USA Alicia-Monique Blanco, of Phoenix.

Contestants were judged in evening gowns and swimsuit competitions, and an interview portion in which they answered a question asked onstage. Unlike the Miss America contest, contestants do not have to perform a talent.

Dalton's mother, Jennie, was Miss North Carolina USA in 1982 and her sister Julia was Miss North Carolina Teen USA in 2008 and the second runner-up in the Miss Teen USA pageant.

As Miss USA 2009, Dalton receives a year's use of a New York City apartment, including living expenses; a public relations team; a two-year scholarship to the New York Film Academy and a year-long salary as Miss USA.

Dalton will compete at the Miss Universe pageant in the Bahamas in August.
