The ECU Student Government Association has asked for the help of the student body to choose the 2009 Homecoming theme. Students can vote through OneStop until Friday, April 17.

Three choices are listed on the Web site:

• "100 Years of Treasured Traditions," which will focus on old traditions from ECU's 100 year history. SGA presented the idea of bringing back an old tradition at each home football game, such as camping around the Cupola or jumping into the fountain.

• "Celebration of the Pirate Nation," which will celebrate what Pirate alumni from around the United States have accomplished and how they've helped the country.

• "Homecoming: A Treasured Tradition," which will pull old homecoming themes since the first ECU homecoming.

The chosen theme will also apply to the floats that student organizations decorate for the homecoming parade.

The themes, which tie in with ECU's centennial celebration, were chosen by the Student Homecoming Committee and the Homecoming Steering Committee, both made up of faculty and staff. Last year's theme was "Go for the Gold" and was chosen to tie in with the Olympics.

Emily Adler, associate director for Student Involvement and homecoming adviser, said students will have the final say and next year's homecoming festivities will revolve around this theme.

"That's why we're doing the vote right now," she said. "Come Friday [April 17], I will tally up the votes and the most popular will be the theme for 2009."

According to Adler, once the decision has been made, the planning committee will start making specific plans to tie in the theme to the events. Homecoming will kick off with a Cannonball Dance on Thursday evening. This will be a formal dance with live music, and the homecoming court will be introduced. There will also be banner, float and lawn/hall decorating competitions as well as a skit night for student organizations.

Other activities include a canned food drive, a pep rally that will be tied in with Freeboot Friday in uptown Greenville and a homecoming concert.

The homecoming football game is Saturday, Oct. 17.

According to their Web site, the purpose of SGA is to "provide a means for responsible and effective student participation in the organization and control of student affairs."

Hmm

Not to seem cynical, but do very many people actually care about things like this? It's trivial beyond belief.
