The ECU Alert System sent out an alert on Monday at 5 p.m. reporting that a female student was sexually assaulted in her Clement dorm room on Saturday, March 28 by three white males between the ages of 17 and 19.

According to the alert, the female was approached by the suspects who asked her for directions to an off-campus location before offering to give the student a ride back to her residence hall. The three males went to the victim's room in Clement Residence Hall where the assault took place. The suspects took several of the student's items, which she discovered when she woke up around 10 a.m. the next day.

John Durham, executive communications director for the university, said that the alert went out when it did-about 48 hours after the incident took place-in order for campus police to gather as much information as possible before making students aware of the incident.

"ECU Police wanted to make sure they had as much information as possible before alerting the campus to the incident," he said.

He also said that students should practice being safe in and around campus whenever possible.

"I think one thing that needs to be reinforced at every opportunity is the need for students to observe basic safety precautions, period," Durham said. "Those include such measures as not walking alone late at night and not catching rides with people you don't know."

Monday's alert stated that the suspects' car is reported to be an early 1990s green Chevy Camaro; the victim first spotted the car on the corner of 11th Street and Charles Boulevard.

The crime log on the ECU Police Department's Web site states that the victim's computer and printer were stolen and that the incident is under "further investigation."

The ECU Police Department declined to comment until the case is investigated further.

Students with any information about the crime should contact the ECU Police Department at 328-6787 or the ECU Police Crime Tip Line at 737-8477.

Sorry, but she set herself up for that when she got into a car with 3 guys she just met. People need to think before they act. Why did she invite 3 guys to her dorm room?

Am I the only one who believes this girl should be kicked out of her dorm for putting everyone in her building in danger? What person gets in a car with THREE GUYS that she does not even know, and lets them in her dorm? She was asking for trouble. (Continued…)

You guys are disgusting. Nobody "deserves" to be sexually assaulted. The act of victim blaming is why so many women are so afraid to go to the police following sexual crimes. (Continued…)

So she got in the car with 'em, then went back to the room.

she went to sleep afterwards.
didn't report anything until the morning afterward? then it was initially as larceny?
from the initial alert that went out
"On 03/28/09 at approximately 10:00 AM, a female reported a larceny from her residence in Clement Hall of personal items by three male individuals she had just met. (Continued…)

In response to Leslie:

The reason that someone said she probably is just angry she was robbed is because a lot of girls do lie about being sexually assaulted to get back at the guy because they are angry. (Continued…)

To the idiot who thinks we said she deserved it: No one deserves to be assaulted, but when you knowingly put yourself in an unsafe situation, things are bound to happen, and the blame will be put on you. (Continued…)

Yes, she made a bad decision. Does that make what happened to her okay? If you honestly feel this way then I feel really sorry for you because you obviously either a) are incapable of sympathy or b) feel the entire world is full of dangerous criminals waiting to take advantage of you. (Continued…)

Don't blame all of us guys for this, its not like we as the male student body told these three guys, hey go pick that girl up. Then see if shes dumb enough to invite you to her dorm room. (Continued…)
