The Pirates of The Cure-ibbean event was held by campus dining to help raise cancer awareness with cancer prevention foods.
"Tonight we are serving foods like tofu, crab and berries that are high in antioxidants that help prevent cancer," said nutrition director of Campus Dining, Janie Eubanks.
With more than 1,300 students served, the overall goal of educating students about cancer and prevention was definitely getting through.
Campus Dining also sold T-shirts, long sleeved shirts and koozies, with all proceeds going to Relay For Life.
Several campus organizations, including Colleges Against Cancer, had stands throughout the lobby of West End Dining Hall to promote awareness about different types of cancer. Lung, ovarian and breast cancer were some of the topics emphasized.
"I think this is a really good way to get information out about cancer," said student volunteer, Caroline Ballance. "Cancer touches everyone's lives at least once so it's something to take very seriously."
ECU has 978 participants, and 72 teams of volunteers raising money for Relay For Life.
Events in the near future include a car wash on March 28 at Chili's, ECU Blitz Week from March 30 through April 2 in Wright Plaza and a dodgeball tournament.
The "Save Your Balls" dodgeball tournament, will take place Sunday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Student Rec Center. The tournament's theme is testicular cancer awareness and prevention. There is a $5 entry fee, with all proceeds going to Relay For Life.
"I really hope people come out and participate in these events," said volunteer Tatum Weaver. "My grandpa died of cancer before I was born, and I've been told that I look just like him, I just wish I had gotten the chance to meet him."
ECU's overall goal is $100,000 and students and faculty have already earned half. With only nine days left until the big event, they will be giving it their all in hopes of reaching their goal.
