Every year, ECU's Ceramics Guild hosts a Chili Bowl sale to benefit less fortunate families in Greenville. This annual event is a way for students in the art department to create ceramic works, to raise money for the needy and to make chili.

All the money raised is divided between First Born and the Greenville Food Bank, two local organizations dedicated to helping less fortunate families and individuals.

Different types of chili will be offered for students after the purchase of a bowl.

"People will come and buy the bowls and basically they'll get the chili for free," said Karen Silinsky, the coordinator for the funds.

"The Chili Bowl sale in all previous years was solely a fundraiser for the Ceramics Guild," she said. "We've decided this year to go ahead and, besides raising money for guild funds, to give to the food banks as well."

According to Silinsky, because this was a fairly last minute decision, the amount to be donated is still being decided upon.

The Ceramics Guild is headed by Associate Professor Jim Tisnado and holds many exhibitions, workshops and lectures throughout the year in order to promote contemporary ceramic art.

Making the bowls is a time consuming process. The students start out by putting the clay on a wheel and then molding the clay by hand. While the clay is drying it's called Greenware.

After drying, the clay is then put in for its first firing. The ceramic is then glazed and put in for a second firing and comes out a finished product.

Kimberly Rumfelt, a third year graduate student concentrating on ceramics, is one of the students responsible for helping to make the chili and helping to set up the event.

"I helped do a community firing for a lot of the bowls in the sale," said Rumfelt.

There will also be a chili contest for whoever makes the best tasting chili at the sale. Members of the guild are going to make vegetarian and meat chili.

"The winner gets a trophy and can bring it back next year to show off," said Lauren Deserres, a ceramics graduate student.

The event will be held in the lobby of the Jenkins Fine Arts Center between the hours of 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. this Wednesday, March 4.
