An exercise for all

I've been taking a yoga class through the Student Recreation Center for about a month now, and it has proven to be one of the best ideas I've had in a while. Every Monday, I am able to go to class, relax and let things go, while doing something that is good for my body.

I've never been the physical activity type. Getting hot and sweaty from running never appealed to me.

Because ECU offers yoga, I was able to explore an exercise arena new to me. ECU offers tons of classes through the Rec Center. There are different yoga, dance and aerobic classes available every day.

My yoga class is very small, which allows the teacher to give us more attention and help us truly benefit from the yoga postures.

On top of the extra classes that you can sign up for, ECU's Rec Center has a wide array of other activities you can participate in. Just by being an ECU student, you gain access to all the different machines, pools, racquet ball and basketball courts.

If you feel like you don't know how to achieve the goals that you want, ECU has personal trainers on staff that can help you.

Participating in the activities held through the Rec Center also gives students a chance to socialize. It gives you the opportunity to play club and intramural sports, so you can get your friends involved. Everyone knows that working out is better when you aren't doing it alone!

Outside of school, access to a facility like the Rec Center would cost around $100 to $200, but using the facility is free and classes are a fraction of the prices you would find at gyms in town.

We could all stand to be a little healthier. Exercise has been proven to release stress and it's just an all-around good thing to get in the habit of doing. You shouldn't take the attitude that you don't have time or you don't like to work out, because we have a nice facility here on campus that is accessible nearly all day.

Everyone can find something fun at the Rec -- I thought I was a person doomed to dislike physical activity, but then I found yoga!
