Croatan building to expand

Sitting in class Monday, we got on the topic of how the Croatan building is being turned into a Chili's. At first I thought, "What an awful idea!" Why would you want to replace Chick-fil-A with a restaurant that most students won't have the time to enjoy between classes? This made me look into it further, and what I found definitely changed my opinion.

The proposed plan for the Croatan isn't to replace Chick-fil-A -- it's to add on to it. By doing this, the Croatan will contain both a Chili's and a Chick-fil-A, as well as act as a dining area for faculty and a catering service for the university. The plan will also add a floor to the building.

By doing this, ECU's campus will provide students, especially those who live on campus, with even more choices for dining. Instead of filling up on pizza, burgers or fries, students will be able to enjoy better food without leaving campus.

When I lived on campus, I used to hate that the only place I could have a nice meal at was at the dining halls. I can't really complain about the dining hall food, because it isn't bad, but I just wanted somewhere else that I could go. Living on campus as a freshman, it was such a hassle to ride the bus to get dropped off by Target or ride all the way out to the freshman lot to get my car.

The expansion of Croatan will also provide jobs for students. And finding a job in Greenville isn't the easiest task.

Unfortunately, crowding in other dining areas on campus will probably be a problem until Croatan is reopened. Once the second floor is built onto Croatan, the problem with crowding is sure to lessen.

This project is scheduled to begin spring 2009, completed during 2010, and open for use by January 2011.

Sadly, I probably won't be here to see the new addition, but I think that it this is a change to ECU's campus that many students will definitely love.
