Chancellor Steve Ballard will announce today that he has withdrawn as a candidate for the presidency of Kansas State University and will remain at East Carolina University.
"The simplest reason is that Kansas State just didn't feel as good to me as ECU does," Ballard said. "You always learn something interviewing for competitive positions, and this one reminded me what a great place ECU is and how much I like working with the people here."
Ballard and his wife Nancy visited the Kansas State campus in Manhattan, Kan. on Jan. 22 and 23 to meet with members of the Board of Regents. Two other finalists were in the running for the presidential position at the university, and the third candidate visited campus this past Monday and Tuesday.
Kansas State has not announced who will succeed retiring president Jon Wefald.
The Kansas Board of Regents, a governing board for the six state universities in Kansas, said in a Jan. 16 release that that their decision will be made early this year.
Ballard has been chancellor of ECU since May 2004. In that time, enrollment has soared and the university has added major new facilities and programs such as the East Carolina Heart Institute and the School of Dentistry.
Ballard included this information in his application letter to Kansas State, saying, "Today, we have the resources to fuel our future and we focus our resources on those activities that make the biggest difference. We are the fastest growing university, by far, among the 17 campuses of the University of North Carolina. Enrollment growth is fully funded in North Carolina and is the foundation for our sustainability. We have grown from 22,000 to 27,700 students and envision 35,000 by 2015."
"It is just great news that Steve is staying with us. He is a great fit for this university, and we will need his skills and vision as we move through the challenging months ahead," Bob Greczyn, chair of the ECU Board of Trustees, said.
On Monday, Ballard-who in 2001 held the position of provost of academic affairs at the University of Missouri-Kansas City-- said that he enjoys working at ECU.
"I am very flattered by the interest of Kansas State. It is the nation's oldest land grant university and an excellent public university," he said. "At the same time, ECU is an excellent university and Nancy and I are happy here. I work with excellent leaders throughout the university and work with a very supportive Board of Trustees."

Dr. Ballard is a very big part of ECU. I would be very unhappy to see him leave. We keep Skip and Dr. B in the same year. Congrats to ECU!!!
