"The City," starring Whitney Port of "The Hills," follows her journey as she settles into New York City after relocating from Los Angeles and starting a new job, working for major fashion mogul Diane Von Furstenberg.
Erin Lucas is Port's longtime friend, who also has a connection to 2007 ECU alum J.R. Gudger, currently in New York City, hoping to become a model and actor.
The series, which began Dec. 29 with nearly 2 million viewers, airs Mondays at 10 p.m. on MTV and will feature Gudger in episode seven, on Monday, Feb. 2.
His role on "The City?" Lucas' ex-boyfriend.
Gudger and Lucas carried on a long-distance relationship during Gudger's senior year of high school and first year of college. After Gudger graduated from ECU, he and Lucas started talking again.
Gudger says that Lucas mentioned she was filming "The City" and introduced him to the producers of the show - and bam! The Asheville, N.C. native started filming with the series.
"[Erin and I] hadn't really been in contact for three or four years," said Gudger. "We started talking again and she told me about the show she was filming … We started filming back in November and it's just now getting to air."
Although Gudger admits that he never watched "The Hills," he's much more interested in "The City" because it features Lucas week after week.
"Having my ex-girlfriend on there definitely makes it more interesting," he said. "I never saw [the other shows] or anything, but because I have a direct correlation with the show now, I watch it regularly."
The preview clip for next week's episode shows Gudger leaving Lucas' apartment after a "good night," but Gudger says that editing leads the audience to believe that something happened between the two ex-lovers - something he said isn't true.
"[The preview] made it look like I was leaving the next morning," he said.
But Gudger says that the clip was taken at 2 p.m.- before he thought the cameras were rolling.
Although the editing may be a bit interesting, Gudger says that most of the things viewers see on "The City" is real.
"It's definitely more reality than I ever thought it was," he said. "All those relationships are factual. The reason Erin is on the show is because she's really good friends with Whitney and the reason I'm on the show is because I used to be with Erin."
