The Pirates, high on momentum, hosted two respectable Colonial Division rivals, No. 3 Loyola and George Washington.
Goaltender Matt Dalgetty stressed the importance of a successful weekend knowing that the final season rankings came out on Monday.
Friday night, ECU went shot-for-shot and penalty-for-penalty with Loyola, but had a three-goal rally in the third period to leash up the Greyhounds, 6-3. Unfortunately, the Pirates would go 1-1 this weekend, losing 6-4 Saturday, as George Washington waged a third period attack on ECU.
The Pirates came home from Wilmington acquiring a few injuries and were forced to bring some new faces into the lineup Friday night.
"It was unexpected and we didn't know what caliber of a game we would get," said coach Mike Markham.
ECU took to the ice and drew first blood as Pirate defender Ryan Konchalski burned one stick-side past the Loyola netminder at 15:54 in the first period, on a 4-on-4.
The Pirates got into penalty trouble late in the first and the Greyhounds attempted to respond by punching the puck through traffic, but goaltender Dalgetty stayed strong in the cage, taking the Pirates to the second period up 1-0.
The Greyhounds started the second period on a two-man advantage and 33 seconds into the period, sniped one past Dalgetty to tie things up, 1-1. Minutes later at 13:48, the Greyhounds, sporting another two-man advantage, punched one through a screen to take a 2-1 lead.
The Pirates battled back on a two-man advantage of their own, as Konchalski buried the rubber from the point once again to tie things up halfway through the second. Two minutes later, still up by two men, another ECU defender got it done when senior Donovan Dean beat the pad of the Loyola keeper to give the Pirates a 3-2 advantage.
To keep things interesting with the second period winding down, the Hounds were given yet another two-man advantage. With only 1:20 left in the second period, Loyola found the back of the net. As they headed for the third and final period it was all tied up at three.
The third period started off relatively quiet as neither team came out with obvious momentum, but close to the halfway mark ECU was awarded the man advantage to go on the power play. At 10:52, with the power play drained to one second, Pirate forward Chris Cesario got a hold of a rebound and put it back.
