CUSA Championship
On Saturday, December 6th, 2008, East Carolina's football team did something it hadn't done in 32 years: Win a conference championship. The team that won the Peach Bowl in 1991 only lost one game, a nail-biter that ended on a controversial onside kick to Illinois. That team though was not a member of a conference, they were an Independent like Navy and Notre Dame have been for the past few years in college football.
I was not able to attend the Conference USA championship game in Tulsa, Okla., finishing off a story book year for the Pirates and for me as a fan. I attended 10 out of the 13 games the Pirates played traveling from Birmingham to Charlottesville. I spent the past 15 weeks if you include two bye weeks traveling the country following the Pirates.
It has been a great season and I have it has been the most fun I've had following a team. There were some rough patches thrown in to a miraculous season. The low point of the season occurred in ECU's overtime lose to intra-state rival N.C. State. As I stood on the camera deck at Wendell H. Murphy Center in the end zone of Carter Finley Stadium, I watched the Wolfpack crush our far fetched dreams of a BCS bowl crash and burn. Though I knew finishing the year undefeated would be quite a tough task, I still had hope that our Pirates could pull it off. The loss was tough for everyone to swallow and for everyone in the Pirate Nation.
It took ECU a little longer to move on though, losing its next two games. Athree-game losing streak that I will not discuss.
The team finished strong after those three loses only losing one more game the rest of the year culminating in the team hoisting the Conference USA championship trophy this past Saturday.
I have lived in Greenville my entire life and as long as I can remember I don't remember a time when the Pirate Nation was so excited and proud of the Pirates. A couple thousand fans gathered in Minges Coliseum to welcome the football team back to Greenville. The fans had to wait roughly an hour after regulation of the basketball game, but they stayed to see their heroes. The team finally arrived and the lights were turned off and they entered Minges Coliseum to their normal introduction. A moment that makes the Pirate Nation go nuts with excitement and passion and a moment that I personally cherish.
