The ECU French Club and student organization "Rendez-vous" recently united to bring ECU the Francophiles under one banner, and celebrated the end of another successful academic year by having a well-attended potluck dinner at Ledonia Wright Cultural Center.
"This is just [so that we can] get together, speak some French and enjoy ourselves," said Ben Hinton, a junior French and communication major, about why the clubs decided to have the get together.
Students who attended the potluck, held in the LWCC's gallery area, were in for an evening of erudite conversation topped off with delicious crepes. Crepes, a popular French dish, are a traditional Mardi Gras treat consisting of a thin, cooked pancake rolled up with cheese, fruit or other delicacies.
Crepes are eaten on Fat Tuesday for good luck in the following year.
Faculty advisor Marylaura Papalas was the brain behind organizing the event, coalescing the two organizations to both avoid redundancy and increase membership.
"Rendez-vous" is now ECU's French club, primarily focused on the language and culture of francophone countries, though all with any interest are welcome to join regardless of their proficiency in French.
"Rendez-vous" meets in Joyner Library on Wednesdays at 5 p.m., and is looking forward to holding many other events in the fall of 2008.
"Vouloir, c'est pouvoir" is the motto of the Rendez-vous. When asked for further clarification, he said, "Where there's a will, there's a way," said Paulo Martinez, vice president of the club.
