ECU has not necessarily been a program that instills fear in the hearts of Conference USA basketball teams in the past, but head coach Mack McCarthy and company are looking to change that this season. Under the direction of McCarthy, who is in his third season at the helm and fifth in the program, the Pirates have increased their win total every season.
Heading into the 2009-2010 season, the ECU men's basketball team will have to look to junior point guard Brock Young for leadership. The Pirates lost their top two scorers last year in Sam Hinnant and James Legan, and will be a young squad this year with just one senior and four juniors on the roster.
Sophomore Amanda Malkiewicz scored the game's only goal in the 76th minute to give ECU a 1-0 victory over Marshall Friday night at Sam Hood Field. The win allowed the Pirates to finish the season with a 9-7-3 record and a 4-6-1 mark in Conference USA. Marshall ends the year at 12-7-0 and 5-6-0 in the league.
